The Ukraine Association of Biobank co-ordinates a network of private, academic biobanks across the Ukraine. The Ukraine Association of Biobank ensures that all member biobanks follow standardized collection and storage procedures that abide by international guidelines including the US NationalCancer Institute (NCI), the International Society for Biological and Environmental Repositories (ISBER), HIPAA (Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996), Good Clinical Practice (GCP) and Good Laboratory Practice (GLP) guidelines.

Member biobanks use Standardized Operating Procedures (SOPs) to collect, process and store all samples. This ensures that all samples are the same quality.

The Ukraine Association of Biobank is the central point to access samples from all member biobanks. The association collaborates with academic and industry researchers working on ethically-approved research projects. They also offer a range of services to support clinical research for FDA (the USFood and Drug Administration) and EMA (European Medicines Agency) applications.

The Ukraine Association of Biobank is licensed by the Ukrainian Ministry of Health to store human tissues and cells. The Ministry of Health is the competent authority in the Ukraine and complies with EU directives. The association is also a member of the European, Middle Eastern and African Society for Biopreservation and Biobanking (ESBB).

Samples Available at Ukraine Association of Biobank

Ukraine Association of Biobank is a single access point for biospecimens stored in a network of academic and industry institutions. These institutions collect and store a range of human tissues from a number of different patient populations, as well as normal tissue collected from surgical patients and post-mortem specimens. The biobank can provide matched blood and tissue samples from the same donors. Ukraine Association of Biobank can also organize specialized collections for researchers.

Samples available at Ukraine Association of Biobank include:

  • fresh frozen tissue
  • formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded (FFPE) tissue
  • tissue microarrays
  • bone marrow
  • blood
  • serum
  • buffy coat
  • urine
  • faeces
  • ascites fluid
  • saliva
  • sputum
  • synovial fluid
  • stem cells: mesenchymal stem cells, embryonic stem cells, iPSC, organoid and 3D cultures, neural hematopoietic stem cells, and cancer stem cells

Sample collections cover the following diseases:

  • breast cancer
  • oncology
  • dermatology
  • neurology
  • immunology
  • infectious diseases
  • automimmune disorders
  • metabolic disorders

Sample-Related Data

Samples are linked to de-identified patient clinical history and pathology data. Researchers may access this data on request.

Sample Collection Procedure

Patient and donor samples are collected at a network of academic and industry institutions. All patients and donors give informed consent for their samples to be used for biomedical research. All participating biobanks use standard operating procedures (SOPs) to collect, store and process samples. These protocols have been approved by Institutional Review Boards and InstitutionalEthics Committees. All SOPs follow Ukranian federal guidelines, HIPAA and GCP guidelines. All samples and patient data are de-identified and coded to maintain patient/donor privacy.

Certified medical pathologists collect the fresh frozen tissue samples. These samples are frozen and stored at -190°C in vapor-phase liquid nitrogen.

Quality Control

Ukraine Association of Biobank is ISO 9001:2015 certified and licensed by the Ukrainian Ministry of Health to collect and store human samples. Staff follow Good Laboratory Practices to process and store samples. Furthermore, quality control is performed on all tissue samples.

Services Available at the Ukraine Association of Biobank

In addition to providing researchers with patient samples and associated data, Ukraine Association of Biobank also provides a number of services, including:

  • custom collection services
  • tissue microarray – up to 1000 tissue samples embedded into a paraffin block to allow high throughput assays.
  • antibody cross-reactivity testing in human and non-human tissues
  • cell proliferation studies
  • target validation
  • clinical biomarker assays

Researcher Criteria

UkraineAssociation of Biobank is open to collaborating with academic and industry researchers who are undertaking ethically approved research.
