- UK Biobank and Oxford Nanopore partner to create a comprehensive epigenetic dataset for health research.
- New epigenetic data will help uncover disease causes and improve personalized treatment approaches.
- The project aims to offer deeper insights into cancer, dementia, and other diseases through advanced sequencing.
A new collaboration between UK Biobank, Oxford Nanopore Technologies, NHS England, and Genomics England is set to transform our understanding of diseases like cancer, dementia, and heart disease. The initiative aims to create the world’s first comprehensive epigenetic map, offering invaluable insights into how environmental factors and lifestyle choices impact disease progression, without altering the DNA sequence itself.
Epigenetics—the study of chemical changes that influence gene expression—could hold the key to understanding why some people develop diseases like cancer despite having similar genetic makeup. Oxford Nanopore will use its cutting-edge sequencing technology to analyze 50,000 samples from UK Biobank, which already houses an unparalleled collection of genetic and lifestyle data from half a million UK volunteers.
Professor Naomi Allen, Chief Scientist at UK Biobank, explained, “By understanding these chemical changes, known as epigenetics, we can learn why some people fall ill and others don’t, even when they share the same genes.” This data will be combined with genetic, imaging, and proteomic information, offering a more detailed picture of how diseases develop in mid-to-old age.
Gordon Sanghera, CEO of Oxford Nanopore, emphasized the importance of this work, stating, “This project represents a significant leap forward in epigenetic research, an increasingly important area of study related to disease progression and response to treatment.” The findings could lead to more personalized, effective treatments, particularly for cancer patients, improving both diagnosis and outcomes.
This initiative underscores the growing role of biobanks and biorepositories in advancing healthcare research. With this new epigenetic map, researchers will be equipped to uncover previously hidden disease mechanisms, driving new therapies and preventative measures that could significantly impact public health globally.
