- Three-way collaboration: ISBER, BBCMBA and BGI partnered to host the World Biobanking Congress 2026 in Shenzhen.
- Dual congress format: The ISBER Global Biobanking Congress ran April 21–23, followed by the BBCMBA congress from April 23–25.
- Focus on innovation and standards: The program emphasized advanced technologies, international collaboration, education and quality-driven biobanking practice.
World Biobanking Congress Brings Global Community to Shenzhen
The International Society for Biological and Environmental Repositories (ISBER) convened its 2026 Global Biobanking Congress in Shenzhen, China, from April 21–23, bringing together biobanking professionals, researchers, institutional leaders and industry partners focused on the future of biospecimen science.
The meeting formed part of the broader World Biobanking Congress 2026, held April 21–25, and was organized through a collaboration between ISBER, the Biobank Branch, China Medicinal Biotech Association (BBCMBA), and BGI. According to the congress program, the event was designed to connect two major biobanking communities and support international partnership, shared learning and innovation.
ISBER, BBCMBA and BGI Partnership Anchors the Event
The congress structure reflected a significant partnership between global and Chinese biobanking organizations. The ISBER Global Biobanking Congress was hosted at the BGI Center in Shenzhen, while the BBCMBA 18th China Holistic Integrate Biobankology Conference and the 13th Hospital Dean’s Summit on Biobank followed from April 23–25 at the Shenzhen Dameisha Coastal Hotel.
A joint collaborative day on April 23 connected the two meetings at the BGI Center, creating a shared platform for international exchange. The program identified ISBER as a global society focused on harmonizing scientific, technical, legal and ethical issues relevant to biological and environmental repositories. BBCMBA was described as a national committee founded in 2009 to advance standardization, education and utilization of biobank resources in China. BGI, headquartered in Shenzhen, served as a major local partner and host venue for the ISBER congress.
The partnership also builds on previous links between ISBER and BBCMBA. In 2018, the two organizations announced an affiliate agreement to support collaboration and guidance for biobanks in China and internationally.
Technology, Education and Global Standards Shape the Program
The 2026 ISBER theme, “Global Collaboration for Advanced Technology and Innovation,” reflected the increasing role of international partnerships in modern biobanking. The program included keynote lectures, scientific sessions, educational and corporate workshops, interactive roundtables, poster presentations and networking activities.
Topics across the meeting highlighted the operational priorities facing biobanks today, including technology adoption, quality management, sample integrity, data management, automation and professional training. The meeting also included recognition of ISBER award recipients, including the ISBER Award for Outstanding Achievement in Biobanking and the ISBER Leadership Award.
These themes align with broader international frameworks for biobanking quality and consistency. ISO 20387 sets general requirements for competent, impartial and consistent biobank operation, including quality control requirements for biological material and data collections. The ISBER Best Practices also provide voluntary guidance for repositories, covering governance, risk management, quality management, facilities, information management, specimen handling, storage and distribution.
BBCMBA Congress Extends the Shenzhen Program
Following the ISBER congress, BBCMBA continued the program with the 18th China Holistic Integrate Biobankology Conference and the 13th Hospital Dean’s Summit on Biobank. This extended format allowed participants to engage with both the global ISBER community and China’s national biobanking network within the same week.
The BBCMBA congress placed additional emphasis on biobankology, hospital biobank development and the strategic role of biobanks in healthcare and research. By linking the ISBER and BBCMBA meetings through a shared collaborative day, the 2026 congress created a bridge between international best-practice dialogue and China’s rapidly developing biobanking ecosystem.
Implications for the Biobanking Sector
The Shenzhen meeting underscored how biobanking is increasingly shaped by cross-border cooperation, harmonized practices and technology-enabled infrastructure. As large-scale biomedical research depends on reliable biospecimens and associated data, international events such as ISBER 2026 provide an important forum for aligning operational expectations, sharing practical expertise and strengthening networks between biobanks, research institutions and industry partners.
For biobank managers, quality professionals and research stakeholders, the congress highlighted a clear direction of travel: more connected biobank networks, stronger emphasis on standards and training, and deeper integration between biospecimen resources, data systems and advanced life science technologies.
