- The startup’s first application, “Specimen Center,” creates a decentralized marketplace where patients and donors can track and monetize their biosamples.
- With $7 million in funding, AminoChain plans to revolutionize biobanking by offering a more efficient, patient-centric platform for the exchange and management of biospecimens.
In a significant development for the biobanking sector, venture capital firm Andreessen Horowitz (A16Z), along with Cercano, has made its first investment in the decentralized science (DeSci) project AminoChain. This startup, focused on developing a decentralized biobank and Layer 2 network, has raised $7 million in pre-seed and seed rounds. The funding aims to enhance the transparency and accessibility of medical data sharing across institutions.
AminoChain is leveraging blockchain technology to create a network that prioritizes patient privacy while enabling seamless data exchange among medical institutions. Its “Amino Node” software allows hospitals and research facilities to keep control of their data while formatting it in a way that makes collaboration easier.
Through this decentralized network, medical institutions can connect, and developers can build user-owned healthcare applications. The first application, “Specimen Center,” is a biosample marketplace where patients and donors can track their samples, access information generated from those samples, and earn revenue when their samples are used for commercial purposes.
One of the standout features of the Specimen Center is its ability to facilitate the exchange of biospecimens between biobanks and researchers. The platform allows biobanks to grant researchers permission to access their collections and search for available research assets. This streamlines licensing agreements and ensures the integrity of sample records.
With its new funding, AminoChain is set to transform biobanking by making the exchange of biospecimens more efficient, transparent, and accessible to medical researchers and institutions. The integration of blockchain technology into biospecimen research represents a significant step forward for the field.
